How Long Does It Take to Learn Romanian? Real Data from 240+ Students

How long does it take to learn Romanian? After six years of teaching Romanian to over 240 students from 42 countries, I can tell you this: the official answer and the real answer are two very different things. The Foreign Service Institute says 575 to 600 hours. My experience says it depends on who you are, what languages you already speak, and whether you actually practice or just download apps and forget about them.

In this guide, I will give you the honest timelines based on what I have seen with real students, not theoretical estimates from government agencies that train diplomats eight hours a day.

How Long to Learn Romanian: The Short Answer

If you speak English and study consistently (one hour a day, five days a week), expect to reach a comfortable conversational level (B1) in about 8 to 12 months. If you already speak Italian, French, Spanish, or Portuguese, cut that in half.

Here is the quick breakdown by level:

  • A1 (Survival basics): 2 to 3 months
  • A2 (Simple conversations): 4 to 6 months
  • B1 (Comfortable daily life): 8 to 12 months
  • B2 (Professional fluency): 14 to 20 months
  • C1 (Near-native confidence): 2 to 3 years

These are averages. Some students get there faster. Some take longer. Keep reading and I will explain why.

What the FSI Says (And Why It Is Only Half the Story)

The Foreign Service Institute classifies Romanian as a Category I language, the easiest group for English speakers. Their estimate: 575 to 600 hours to reach professional working proficiency.

That sounds great. The problem? FSI students are full-time diplomats studying Romanian five hours a day, five days a week, with private tutors, immersion exercises, and zero distractions. They are not fitting lessons between a full-time job, two kids, and a Netflix habit.

For a normal human being studying one hour a day, those 600 hours translate to roughly 18 to 24 months. That is the realistic number you should plan around.

Also worth noting: the FSI measures “professional working proficiency,” which is approximately B2 on the CEFR scale. If your goal is just ordering food in Bucharest and chatting with your Romanian partner’s family, you need far fewer hours than that.

How Long to Learn Romanian Based on Your Native Language

After teaching 240+ students, I have noticed clear patterns based on native language background. Here is what I have observed:

Italian speakers: the fastest learners

Romanian and Italian share about 70% of their vocabulary. My Italian students consistently reach B1 in 3 to 5 months with regular practice. They often understand written Romanian from day one without any prior study. Grammar feels intuitive to them because the structures are so similar.

French and Spanish speakers: fast, with some surprises

French speakers pick up vocabulary quickly but struggle with pronunciation at first. The sounds are different from what they expect. Spanish speakers have a similar advantage with vocabulary but find Romanian word order more flexible than they are used to. Both groups typically reach B1 in 5 to 7 months.

English speakers: the largest group

Most of my students are English speakers. The good news: Romanian uses the Latin alphabet, pronunciation is phonetic (what you see is what you say), and there are more English cognates than you would expect. The challenge: noun cases, gendered articles, and verb conjugations require patience. Average time to B1: 8 to 12 months with consistent study.

German and Dutch speakers

These students already understand the concept of noun cases and gendered articles from their own language. That gives them a structural advantage even though the vocabulary is less familiar. They typically reach B1 in 7 to 10 months.

Asian language speakers (Japanese, Chinese, Korean)

Starting from zero shared vocabulary or grammar, these students face the longest journey. But I have seen incredibly dedicated learners from Japan and Korea reach B1 in 10 to 14 months because they tend to study with remarkable consistency. Discipline beats linguistic advantage every time.

5 Factors That Affect How Long It Takes to Learn Romanian

1. Your native language

As I just explained, knowing another Romance language is the single biggest factor in how long it takes to learn Romanian. If you speak Italian, you are already 40% of the way there before your first lesson.

2. Consistency beats intensity

I have seen students who study 30 minutes every day outperform students who do three-hour marathons on weekends. Your brain needs daily exposure to build neural pathways. Five hours on Sunday does not replace 45 minutes on Monday through Friday.

3. Speaking from day one

Students who start speaking early, even badly, progress twice as fast as those who wait until they feel “ready.” You will never feel ready. Just start. Make mistakes. That is how your brain learns.

4. Having a clear goal

People learning Romanian because their partner is Romanian reach conversational fluency significantly faster than those learning “just because.” A real, emotional reason to communicate creates urgency that no app can replicate.

5. Living in Romania (or not)

Immersion accelerates everything. Students who move to Romania and combine lessons with daily life interactions often reach B1 in 4 to 6 months. But it is not magic. I have also seen expats who lived in Bucharest for three years and barely spoke beyond “o bere, va rog” because they never left their English-speaking bubble.

3 Mistakes That Make Learning Romanian Take Longer

Too much grammar, too early

Some learners spend their first three months memorizing declension tables before they can order a coffee. This is one of the most common reasons why learning Romanian takes longer than it should. Grammar matters, but context first, rules second. You do not need to know the genitive case to introduce yourself.

App-hopping

Downloading Duolingo, then Mondly, then Memrise, then Babbel, then starting over on Duolingo. Every app switch resets your progress. Pick one, stick with it for at least two months, then evaluate. I reviewed the best language apps for beginners if you need help choosing.

Avoiding speaking practice

Listening to podcasts and reading grammar books feels productive. And it is, to a point. But if you never open your mouth, you are training yourself to understand Romanian, not to speak it. These are two different skills. My podcast is designed to get you repeating out loud, not just passively listening.

A 12-Month Roadmap to Learn Romanian (For English Speakers)

So how long to learn Romanian if you follow a structured plan? Here is what a realistic path looks like if you study one hour a day, five days a week:

Months 1 to 3: Foundation

  • Learn the alphabet and pronunciation rules (takes about one week)
  • Build core vocabulary: 500 most common words
  • Basic sentence structures: subject + verb + object
  • Start speaking simple phrases immediately
  • Resources: an app for vocabulary + one lesson per week with a tutor

Months 4 to 6: Building confidence

  • Expand vocabulary to 1,500 words
  • Past tense, future tense, basic conjunctions
  • Start understanding podcast episodes designed for learners
  • Hold 5-minute conversations about daily life
  • Read simple texts: children’s books, news headlines, social media posts

Months 7 to 9: The intermediate plateau

  • This is where most people quit. Do not quit.
  • Grammar deepens: subjunctive mood, noun cases, pronouns
  • Vocabulary reaches 2,500+ words
  • Watch Romanian YouTube with subtitles
  • Hold 15-minute conversations on familiar topics
  • Consider a grammar workbook at this stage

Months 10 to 12: Breaking through

  • Speak comfortably about most everyday topics
  • Understand 70 to 80% of normal-speed Romanian speech
  • Read news articles and blog posts without a dictionary
  • Start thinking in Romanian for simple thoughts
  • You are now B1. Congratulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you learn Romanian in 3 months?

If you already speak Italian or another Romance language, yes, you can reach a solid A2 (basic conversations) in three months. If English is your only language, three months of daily study will get you through A1 and into early A2. You will not be fluent, but you will be functional for travel and simple interactions.

Is Romanian harder than Spanish or French?

For English speakers, Romanian is slightly harder than Spanish (which has simpler grammar) but comparable to French in overall difficulty. The noun cases and article system add complexity, but the phonetic spelling makes pronunciation much easier than French. I wrote a detailed comparison in my article on Romanian difficulty for English speakers.

What is the fastest way to learn Romanian?

Combine three things: daily vocabulary study with an app, weekly speaking lessons with a tutor, and real-world exposure (music, podcasts, social media in Romanian). There is no shortcut that replaces consistent effort, but this combination is the fastest way to learn Romanian I have seen across hundreds of students.

How many hours a week should I study?

Minimum five hours per week to see real progress. Seven to ten hours per week is the sweet spot for most adult learners. Below five hours, you spend too much time re-learning what you forgot since your last session.

Can I learn Romanian online without going to Romania?

Absolutely. Most of my students have never been to Romania when they start. With the right online tools, video lessons, and conversation practice with native speakers, you can reach B2 without ever boarding a plane. Living in Romania helps, but it is not required.

Is Romanian worth learning?

I am obviously biased, but yes. Romania is a beautiful country with warm people who are genuinely thrilled when foreigners speak their language. Whether you are learning for love, travel, work, or pure curiosity, the effort pays off in connections that would never happen otherwise.
