Learn Romanian While Exploring the Most Unique Places in Romania
Unique places in Romania are everywhere, from underground salt mines to volcanic lakes and living stones. In this podcast episode, I take you on a journey through eight of Romania’s most fascinating destinations while teaching you real Romanian vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at three different levels. After teaching Romanian online for over six years to 240+ students from 42 countries, I have found that learning through meaningful context is what makes vocabulary stick. That is exactly what this episode delivers.
Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced learner, this episode of the I Learn Romanian Podcast gives you a story-based lesson that progresses from A1 to C1. You will hear clear, natural pronunciation, pick up real vocabulary used in context, and discover cultural insights about Romania along the way.
What You Will Learn in This Episode
This episode is structured as a three-level progression. You start with simple sentences and basic vocabulary at the beginner level, then move into richer descriptions and more complex grammar at intermediate, and finish with advanced cultural commentary and nuanced expressions. The topic ties everything together: eight unique destinations across Romania that most tourists never hear about.
Here is what each level covers:
- Beginner (A1 to A2): Basic vocabulary for travel, nature, and geography. Simple sentence structures you can reuse in everyday conversation.
- Intermediate (B1 to B2): Expanded descriptions, adjective agreement, and more detailed explanations of each place. You will start building longer, more natural sentences.
- Advanced (C1): Cultural context, idiomatic expressions, and fast-paced narration that mirrors how Romanians actually speak about their country.
The 8 Unique Places in Romania Featured in This Episode
Each destination in this episode was chosen because it offers rich vocabulary and a fascinating story. Here is a brief guide to the places you will explore while learning Romanian.
1. Delta Dunării (The Danube Delta)
The Danube Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tulcea county, in the northeast of Romania. It is one of the largest and best-preserved river deltas in Europe, home to over 300 bird species and 45 fish species. In the episode, you will learn nature vocabulary in Romanian: words for water, birds, fish, and the unique ecosystem of this wetland.
2. Transfăgărășan
The Transfăgărășan is a mountain road that connects Sibiu and Argeș counties, crossing the southern Carpathians at an altitude of 2,042 metres. Built between 1970 and 1974, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world. This section of the episode introduces vocabulary related to mountains, roads, altitude, and travel directions in Romanian.
3. Salina Turda (Turda Salt Mine)
Salina Turda is a former salt mine in Cluj county that has been transformed into one of Romania’s most visited attractions. The mine was first exploited in the 11th century and now features an underground Ferris wheel, a boating lake, and a treatment centre. You will pick up vocabulary related to underground spaces, history, and leisure activities.
4. Vulcanii Noroioși (The Mud Volcanoes)
Located near Berca in Buzău county, the mud volcanoes are a rare geological phenomenon where natural gas pushes mud to the surface, creating small cone-shaped formations. Some reach up to 5 metres in height. In the episode, this section covers vocabulary for geology, earth, and natural processes, perfect for building scientific vocabulary in Romanian.
5. Trovanții (The Living Stones)
Near Costești in Vâlcea county, you will find the Trovanți: massive sandstone and conglomerate formations that appear to grow over time. Some weigh up to 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes. Scientists have not fully explained the phenomenon. This is one of the most unusual sections of the episode, and the vocabulary covers stones, growth, mystery, and scientific curiosity.
6. Cimitirul Vesel (The Merry Cemetery)
In the village of Săpânța, Maramureș county, the Merry Cemetery is famous for its brightly painted wooden crosses. Each cross tells the story of the person buried beneath it, often with humour and warmth. It has been recognised by UNESCO and is one of the most culturally rich sites in Romania. The vocabulary here covers death, life stories, art, colour, and tradition.
7. Lacul Sfânta Ana (Saint Ana Lake)
Lacul Sfânta Ana is a volcanic crater lake in Harghita county, in the eastern Carpathians. It is the only volcanic lake in Romania, sitting at around 950 metres altitude. The water is remarkably clear and the surrounding forest is untouched. In this part of the episode, you will learn vocabulary about lakes, volcanoes, forests, and natural beauty.
8. Peștera Urșilor (The Bears’ Cave)
Discovered in 1975 near Chișcău in Bihor county, the Bears’ Cave contains impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and the remains of prehistoric cave bears. The galleries extend to around 500 metres in depth. This final section of the episode teaches vocabulary for caves, prehistoric animals, and geological formations.

How to Get the Most Out of This Unique Places in Romania Episode
Listening is a powerful first step, but it works best when you combine it with active practice. Here is what I recommend to my students:
- Listen once without pausing. Focus on understanding the general idea, not every word. This trains your ear to follow natural Romanian speech.
- Listen again and pause. Write down new words, repeat sentences out loud, and check your pronunciation against mine.
- Use the vocabulary in conversation. The fastest way to make new words stick is to use them with a real person. If you do not have a conversation partner, book a lesson and we will practise together.
Several of my students have told me that combining podcast episodes with our 1:1 lessons helped them break through plateaus they had been stuck at for months. Listening builds your passive skills. Speaking with a tutor who corrects you in real time is what turns passive knowledge into active fluency.
